My all time favorite breaking news story was an Amber Alert in the year 1999. This was before The Amber Alert was the code name.
A mother was shopping at a corner market with her 9 mo. old baby. She came out of the store and buckled the baby in the car, and while putting away the groceries, she realized she forgot something. The car engine was running, baby in the car. She runs into store to retrieve her missing item. When she came out, both the car and baby were gone. Meanwhile, a media storm was brewing with an all out search for the baby. I was a young ambitious TV news photographer at the time listening to the police scanners. Police were on the lookout for a midsize blue sedan. I was probed the neighborhoods and found the stolen car. The lone baby was asleep in the back seat. This was fantastic... I called my assignment editor. It was fun watching the frenzied Press and emergency vehicles roll straight toward me. And Wham! The money shot of Mom being reunited with baby... It was the first time I became the headline...
